Hockey safety tips you should know about

Hockey is one of the most exciting sports you can play. However, it’s also one of the most demeaning body sports, especially if you’re a beginner. When you’re playing hockey or any sport in general, injuries are unavoidable. But fortunately, there are safety tips that you can incorporate to lessen your chances of getting injured. So, if you’re interested to know more, here are some of the tips we can share with you: 

Wear proper gear when playing 

Hockey is a sport where you need to wear protective gear before getting into the field. Before you participate in any hockey game, make sure you cover yourself with the right attire to make sure that you’re safe from any incidents that may take place. Some of the most important gears you should have are cleats, shin guards, goggles, mouthguards, gloves and masks. 

If you’re a goalie, make sure you always have head protection, leg and foot guards and upper body gear. 

Drink lots of water during and after playing 

Staying hydrated is one of the most major requirements in any sport. If you’re exerting too much effort, your body loses its water reserves, making you weak and causing dehydration. When you’re playing hockey, make sure you’re well-hydrated so your body is more alert and active while you’re having fun in the field. 

Attend to injuries right away 

If you get any injury while you’re playing, make sure you attend to it right away. No matter how small the injury is, ask a professional or aid to look at it right away so you won’t suffer any sustaining damages in the long run. Here are some of the most common hockey injuries you should watch out for: 

  • High-impact contact from other players
  • Rigid boards
  • Goalposts
  • Skate blades
  • Hockey sticks
  • Pucks moving at high speeds.

Do warm-ups first before playing 

One of the most important things you can do before playing is warm up. Before going out in the field, prepare your body by doing stretches. The areas you should focus on are your lower back, hips and arms as these are the most moved parts of your body during hockey. Going into a game without doing warm-ups can increase your chances of getting injuries. 

Avoid tension with other players as much as possible 

Playing sports can easily become a breeding ground for tension, especially when the game becomes intense. During these scenarios, getting annoyed or pissed at a teammate or rival is unavoidable. Sometimes, when the tension escalates, it can end up in a fight. When playing hockey, make sure you have enough patience to deal with the unwanted stress you can encounter during the game. This can help prevent fights, which can cause even bigger injuries.
